John Collingwood Bruce, The Wallet Book of the Roman Wall: A Guide to the Pilgrim’s Journeying Along the Barrier of the Lower Isthmus 1863
John Collingwood Bruce (1805 –1892) was a member of SANT and an important populariser of the history and importance of Hadrian’s Wall during the 19th century. He organised the first Pilgrimage of the Wall in 1849, an event which is still actively maintained by the Society. In 1851 he published his comprehensive and authoritative work The Roman Wall – A Historical, Topographical and Descriptive Account... .
To meet the needs of the increasing number of people visiting the wall, in 1863 he produced an innovative publication The Wallet Book of the Roman Wall: A Guide to Pilgrim’s Journeying Along the Barrier of the Lower Isthmus which was purposely smaller, lighter and more portable. This formed the basis of the Handbook to the Roman Wall which is still published and currently in its fourteenth edition. The Society’s library has a complete set of Bruce’s publications.
