Summer Social, Ballast Hills Burial Ground and Brinkburn Brewery

Summer Social, Wednesday 11 June 2025, 5.30-11.00,

Ballast Hills Burial Ground and Brinkburn Brewery, Ouseburn, Newcastle upon Tyne

We will meet at 5.00pm at The Ship Inn at bottom of Stepney Bank/north end of Lime Street. Vehicle parking, bus and metro stops are all close by.

Mike Greatbatch will lead a short walk through the Ouseburn, telling of the lives of Ouseburn residents who are buried at Ballast Hills to illustrate the significance of the site both for dissenters and the working poor.

We will end the walk at Ballast Hills Burial Ground where Dr. Myra Giesen will present on the project she is leading with other Newcastle University academics and how community collaboration, archival work, and on-site investigations are shaping a deeper understanding of the burial ground.

We will then head to Brinkburn Brewery, just opposite the Burial Ground, to enjoy a light buffet and performances by Phoenix Folk and poet Harry Gallagher, who will bring the Ballast Hills Burial Ground’s stories to life. (Drinks can be purchased at the bar).

Tickets are £22, and bookings will close on 30 May.
