The consequence of which
together with the natural weakness
of the Stratum of the Gravel on
which the Bridge was built, was,
that the Torrent I apprehend had
forced the Gravel out of its
Place or & not only forced the
Gravel out of its place but
that the Incumbered Weight
of a body of water of 5 feet in
Bridge
thickness above the superior to
what was to counterbalance
it below had actually forced
down the whole Stratum of
upon which the bridge was Erected
the Gravel into the soft Matter
