The Proceedings of the Society of Antiquaries of Newcastle upon Tyne (PSAN) began in 1855 as a printed record of the monthly meetings of the Society, and also of its excursions (called 'country meetings'). With some gaps, it continued in this form, in parallel with Archaeologia Aeliana, until 1956. It contains many lively accounts of our doings.
PSAN has been digitised, and is now with Archaeology Data Services at York University who are uploading it onto their website for public access They have now provided a sample link, to the very first volume. This includes a description of the first outing, to Vindolanda and Housesteads, in 1855.
Meanwhile, digitised volumes of PSAN are available to members via Dropbox as a temporary home,. Please note some warnings;
- What you see is supplied on an "as is" basis. The standard of digitisation, particularly of photos, is not as good as might be hoped, but the originals were in any case not brilliant.
- In among the files (after the list of folders) you might notice a small one called "00Howto.txt". This contains some instructions to help you look at things on Dropbox
- The folder for each volume has a "Contents" file. This also contains a few notes for working purposes.
You do NOT need to have a Dropbox account to access the PSAN PDFs, and you will NOT be downloading any software onto your computer.
