Research grants

The Society considers applications for small grants towards research relevant to its core interests, the history and antiquities of the historic counties of Durham and Northumberland, and Newcastle upon Tyne.

Society grants will be offered at a maximum of £1000. If a grant over £1000 in value is necessary, a compelling case for the rationale of this request is required, and a pre-application conversation with the Chair of the Research Committee is recommended.

Applications are considered twice yearly. The deadline for receipt of applications for work to be carried out during the year, or the following year are September 30 and March 31. We do not consider applications for retrospective research activity.

For enquiries and to return completed forms please contact the Hon. Secretary (secretary@newcastle-antiquaries.org.uk).

Grant criteria and guidance

  • Grants will be awarded to projects that are clearly defined and time-limited with an achievable completion date.
  • Applicants for grants for help with excavations should list the destination of any artefacts and archives resulting from the excavation and a realistic assessment of post-excavation costs, including the costs of publication of the excavation report.
  • Applicants should seek funding from other grant-giving organisations in addition to the Society whenever possible.
  • Completed grant application forms should contain all the necessary information for the initial assessment of the project.
  • The Society emphasises the importance of the publication of research projects. Therefore if the results of a project are not to be published and if the grant application is successful, you will be asked to provide a brief report of your work for possible inclusion in the Society’s bi-annual News Bulletin.
  • There is no set level of funding set aside for grants; the level of funding available will depend on the financial state of the Society in a given year. The Society cannot guarantee that it will be in a position to award a research grant or grants in a given year.
